What type of attic insulation do you have?

When’s the last time you took a look in your attic?
One brave homeowner recently climbed up there and came back with a big question: “What insulation is this?”
It’s a good question, because the type of insulation in your attic makes a huge difference in comfort, safety, and energy bills.
Common attic insulation types
Insulation often looks alike after a couple of decades, but here are a few quick ways to tell them apart:
- Blown fiberglass – light, fluffy, with a bit of a shiny texture
- Cellulose – gray, dense, and looks like shredded newspaper
- Vermiculite – pebbly, shiny, and a red flag (it can contain asbestos)
When we inspect an attic, the first thing we do is check for vermiculite. If it’s present, you’ll want to avoid disturbing it until it’s tested. Vermiculite can contain asbestos, which is a serious health hazard.
What healthy insulation should look like
Ideally, you’ll see a consistent, fluffy layer of blown cellulose about 16–18 inches deep. It should look dry, even, and free of gaps. If your insulation looks patchy, dirty, or compressed, chances are you’re losing energy through your roof.
For homeowners who want to keep the attic floor clear for storage, there’s another option: spray foaming the slopes of the attic roof.
By insulating the slopes instead of the floor, you create a conditioned space that stays comfortable year-round while leaving the attic floor open and usable.
When in doubt, don’t guess
If you’re not sure what you’re looking at – or if it seems like a mix – it’s best to call in a professional. A quick test can confirm the material and give you peace of mind.
The bonus? While we’re in your attic, we can also check for air leaks. Sealing leaks and upgrading attic insulation is often the most cost-effective way Southeast Michigan homeowners can cut energy bills and keep room temperatures more consistent.
