Is this bad mold in my crawlspace?

Someone recently asked, “Is this black mold in my crawlspace bad?”
Great question - and one we hear a lot.
If you’ve got light black mold in your crawlspace, especially in an older home without a vapor barrier, you’re not alone. This kind of mold is pretty common. And while it’s usually not an emergency, it’s definitely a sign that your crawlspace could use some attention.

What should you do?
If there’s no strong odor and the mold appears light, here’s what we typically recommend:
-
Install a reinforced vapor barrier to block out ground moisture.
-
Seal the crawlspace using closed-cell spray foam on the walls and rim joists to keep out air leaks, moisture, and outdoor temperatures.
These upgrades help control the moisture that allows mold to thrive in the first place.

When to Worry
If the mold looks heavy, has a musty smell, or if you’re sensitive to mold, it may be worth exploring mold treatment. But in most cases, full encapsulation will stop the moisture and help any existing mold go dormant.
